The core of the castle is surrounded by three city walls, interspersed with towers. It was founded in the Middle Ages, perhaps by the Lombards, who in the eighth century were in their period of greatest expansion, in control of passageways in Valle del Fibreno and in Val di Comino . It was then sacked by Saracens and Huns and eventually became a possession of the Monastery of Montecassino During World War II German troops, who were fighting along the Gustav Line, decided to transform the castle into a field hospital, and drew a large red cross that today has become the distinctive symbol of the castle.
