The shrine was built by adding a seventeenth century facade onto an ancient Benedictine monastery of the eighth century. In the cave is a perennial spring, and, on the altar the black lava stone statue of St. Michael the Archangel. According to legend this was the statue marking the site where he wanted to be worshiped. The last Sunday of June, the statue of the saint is carried in pilgrimage accompanied by ancient songs and votive by bagpipers.
