The Sanctuary of Hercules Victor was dedicated to the patron god of ancient Tibur, and covered a very wide area at the foot of the city. For its construction a covered road was dug under the sanctuary, to allow the ancient Via Tiburtina Valeria to pass through, and the arches were built to overpass the ravines on the Aniene River. The sanctuary was divided into three areas: a temple, a theatre and a square/sacred area. Inside the sanctuary was the statue of Hercules, worshiped by the Salii who organized a ceremony of honour during the ides of August, as we are reminded by Virgil in the Aeneid. Up to fifty years ago, the whole area was occupied by Cartiere Tiburtine.
