Between the end of the second and third centuries AD, Emperor Settimio Severo built the camp of the Second Parthian Legion along the Via Appia. The Roman camps were fortified places surrounded by massive city walls and in Albano occupied an area of over 10 hectares and housed about 6,000 soldiers, who took the name of Albani Legionaries. One of the gates to the camp was Porta Pretoria, made of ashlar masonry with rectangular lava stone, the remains of which can be seen on the Via Appia near the seat of the municipality of Albano.
