The palio is a revival of a great exhibition from 1464 called the "mercantile", lasting about a week. In those times, this fair was exempted by royal decree from all kinds of taxes and duties, and every year it was visited by merchants who came from all over central Italy to exchange their products with those woollen and agricultural products from the plateau of Leonessa. At the end of the day a horse race called "Palio of Velvet" was held and was so ‘heartfelt’ that in 1557, Margaret of Austria had to suspend it because of the many episodes of blood that had occurred.
