In 1592 Cerreto was attacked by three hundred robbers, led by Sciarra, that besieged the town and camped under the walls. The inhabitants of Cerreto tied fagots around a cat, set fire to the fagots and threw the cat into the camp of the criminals. The cat, looking for his salvation, ran among the criminals setting fire to the barns and all the inflammable camp material camp. In honour of this cat, every year a festival is held and a prize given among the four districts of the territory; the prize for the winner is a wooden statue representing a cat. During the celebrations there are parades and kiosks with typical local dishes.
