The Roman marble sarcophagus of Lanuvio is made with Greek Proconnesus marble and dates back to a period between the third and fourth centuries AD. From 1675 it was given by Duke Filippo Cesarini, as a public fountain in the main facade of the Colonna Palace, who had found it in his villa near the Appian Way. It is decorated only on two sides because they were the only ones visible inside the burial chamber from which it came.
