The history of Sgurgola as a grape growing area goes back to pre-Roman times. From the Victorian era, Sgurgola is famous in Europe for table grapes. In autumn, the last week of September or the first weekend of October, the grapeof Sgurgola, one of the two most wonderful autumn fruits, is celebrated. This festival arose over 90 years ago as a tool to promote the grapes of Sgurgola that had become much sought after in Europe (particularly Germany). The hillsides around Sgurgola produced wonderful table grapes that were hand selected by the local women for export and then packed and sent firstly by train north, and some further afield by ship.  Today the festival recalls the traditions and welcomes the recreation of fine grape growing in the district
