According to the Roman magistrate Bartolo, the church was built on a temple dedicated to Apollo built by Amicle refugees. In 587 AD, the Bishop of Fondi demolished the temple and he constructed an alcove with the image of the Madonna. The alcove then became the church of the "Madonna del Latte", whose name derives from a painting of the Virgin suckling the Child. According to tradition, the mother who is unable to breastfeed her children goes to this church with a big stone on her head, a sign of humility, and, scraping plaster with a finger from the fresco, ate it while asking the Virgin to get back her milk.
