Caetani Castle is the symbol of the city and one of the rare examples of European fortress built on the plain: 33 meters high from its terrace overlooking the Plains. It consists of a keep or round tower (high observation tower later adapted to the work of defense), which rises above a square tower, and the fortress has tall cylindrical towers at the corners. The latter are characterized by ‘hems’ at the top with "machicolations" that allowed the defenders to be protected even when dropping rocks against the assailants below. The construction of the fortress dates back to 1319, along with the renovation of the city walls built by Roffredo III Caetani who wanted to make it the centre of his dominion.
