The castle was founded as a fortified monastery of the Subiaco Benedictine monks around the year one thousand and immediately becomes the nascent village landmark. Around 1280 with ownership passing to the Passamonti family it was expanded. The present form dates back to the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries at the hands of the Massimo princes that, immediately after the severe plague, turned the castle in the centre of recovery by creating crafts, a pharmacy and an open theatre for the people. The last works were in 1800 when, in the then Italian fashion, remodelling was in the Gothic style.
