The villages of Rocchettine and Rocchette are twin settlements on two spurs of the Sabine hills, on the opposite sides of the gorge of the torrent Aia, in a strategic position of control of the Tiber Valley. They are both fortified settlements built in the thirteenth century, with sheer fortifications. The higher village, Rocchettine (also called Rocca Guidonesca) is completely uninhabited while Rocchette (Rocca Bertalda) is inhabited. Nevertheless their histories are the same and the castles were among the possessions of the Bishop of Sabina and then passed under the direct control of the Holy See. They were then controlled by the Orsini and the Savelli and then come back in 1500s to the Apostolic Camera.
