Sutri was the last stop on Via Francigena before Rome and the name of the gate is probably due to this. This gateway to the medieval part of town was crossed by thousands of pilgrims. In the door you can see three historic periods: the Etruscan walls, the Roman fortifications and the ramparts of the fifteenth century realised by instruction of Cardinal Altieri. Above the door you can see the coat of arms with Saturn on horseback.
