Poggio Mirteto celebrates a transgressive and irreverent carnival that dates back at least to 1579, the year that relates the first written records of a citizens' committee that meets for planning the carnival festivities. The name 'Carnevalone' was given to it in 1861. The carnival includes floats, masked parades, dances and ends with a bonfire of a paper maché puppets, the Carnevalone, who before being burned makes a symbolic will.
