Bolsena was founded on the shores of a lake of volcanic origin, as is the entire area of Viterbo. Its medieval center is one of the best preserved in Lazio. It is famous for being called "The city of the Eucharistic Miracle" by which the Catholic Church instituted the feast of Corpus Christi. In 1264 the Pope promulgated the Transiturus Bull instituting the Feast of Corpus Christi. In Bolsena the sacred stones are kept, one of which is always exposed to the veneration of the faithful.
