Ventotene is an island of the Pontine archipelago, originally called Pandataria and said to be "the island of the sirens" of Ulysses. Here many Roman women lived in exile, including Julia, daughter of the Roman Emperor Augustus. It has two adjacent ports, one of which is from the Roman era. It is a protected marine area, a paradise for divers, and the terrestrial park is important because it is a stop for migratory birds (and ornithologists). On the small island of Santo Stefano is a Bourbon prison active until the 1960s. On Ventotene the Manifesto of European federalism was written.
