Gubbio lies low on the western side of the Appenines and has done since the bronze age. It is distinctly medieval in its architecture. After a history of leadership in the first crusade, it has a number of historical basilica and churches. After the renaissance pottery became the major local art form, and there are still remnants of its prior glory in work of local potters. Gubbio is home to the second largest Roman theatre, and is well worth a deviation from the Umbrian route through the Appenines to sip the Sagrantino wine.
