Toffia has been inhabited since Roman times and many ancient artifacts can be seen in the walls of its churches, especially that of San Lorenzo. The current village was probably founded by the Lombard Theobald I, Duke of Spoleto, and the first written records we have from 940 are in the register of the Abbey of Farfa. Over the centuries many families have succeeded each other in its control: Orsini, Farnese, Barberini and Lante della Rovere. Its name could depend on the name of a particularly hard rock or from an interpretation of 'vine plantations'. Even St. Francis stayed in this area for a short period.
