Terracina has always been an ally of Rome and through here goes Via Appia linking Rome and Naples. Its importance is evidenced by the remains of the theatre, the forum and the Temple of Giove (Jupiter) Anxur. In the Middle Ages Terracina was part of the Papal States, and here Pope Urban II was elected. A period of growth that gave Terracina old town its present appearance, with its cathedral, the port and several tower-‐houses. Then for many centuries Terracina was disputed between the Papal State and the Kingdom of Two Sicilies.
