Subiaco was for centuries the "industrial centre" of the Papal States, and here were based activities in support of the Pope, such as the mint, the paper mill and the processing of precious metals. The decision to build thirteen monasteries of St. Benedict changed the importance of Subiaco that is now remembered for the important monastery of St. Scholastica, the only one left standing.
