Pomezia is a 'Foundation City' that is one of the Agro Romano cities founded by Mussolini after the reclamation of the Pontine marshes. The first stone was laid on April 25, 1937 and the city was officially inaugurated on October 29, 1939. It began as a farming village and is populated by families from Veneto, Emilia Romagna and Friuli to whom the ONC (Opera Nazionale Combattenti) had given a house and a plot of land. After the war it was heavily industrialized with the funds from the Cassa del Mezzogiorno and since the industrial decline Pomezia has become more and more a satellite city of Rome living from activities of the tertiary sector.
