The town is a medieval village perched on the slopes of Mount Rosato. It is first mentioned in a 1117 document from the register of the Abbey of Farfa on which it depended for a long time until it became part of the possessions of Rieti. In 1425 it participated in the revolt of the local castles against hegemony of Rieti, reducing the number of guard towers, seen as symbols of oppression. The main historical and architectural testimony is linked to St. Francis, who spent a long time in this area called the Holy Valley. He arrived for the first time in 1209 and, impressed by the happy tributes paid by the community, he decided to settle in a small cave not far from the town. Here, in 1235, the monastery of St. James was built.
