Latina is a recent city founded with the name of Littoria during the fascist period on December 18, 1932. The name was changed at the end of the war to release it from the fascists memories. The architecture of its original nucleus and the urban layout is one of the best examples of Italian Rationalist. The city was founded as a result of the Pontine plain reclamation that made a large area of swamps in southern Lazio livable. To populate these lands entire towns of Venetians were moved who brought with them their dialects and traditions.
