Gerano sits among the chestnut trees and olive groves to the east of Rome, in an area similar to Montagna delle Gru (Gherania) in Greece, hence the name of Gheranos: Gerano. It lies on the route of the ancient Roman aqueducts and in the area you will find many remains from Roman times. After centuries of destruction due to repeated Barbarian invasions, the community was formed around the first rural organizations of monks and Gerano entered into the possessions of the Church, the so-called "Patrimonium S. Petri." Gerano passed under the control of large families for nearly a thousand years, until it was again attached to the Papal State in 1752.
