Ciciliano is a town northeast of Rome, on high ground at the intersection of several mountain ranges. It was an ideal place for centuries for hunting and the first traces date back to the Neolithic period. As with many municipalities of Lazio, its story starts around a thousand when populations sought refuge on the heights to defend against Saracens and the Hungarians. Until the twelfth century, Ciciliano was disputed between the two abbeys of Subiaco and Tivoli until in 1373 the estate was assigned to the Colonna family. The Colonna sold the castle to pay debts, and from 1564 the castle belonged to the Theodoli family.
