Cerreto is a community on a hill in the Giovenziale valley and is surrounded by woods. Its name, in fact, veins from ‘cerro’ (turkey oak), similar to the common oak tree and its coat of arms shows a turkey oak on three mountains. Its origins are ancient, with pre-Roman and Roman remains, but the village dates from around one thousand AD and was formed around a fortress. The country has been subject of the Abbey of Subiaco and for centuries has been disputed between Subiaco and Tivoli. The quadrangular fortress dates from the fourteenth century, of which today remains only the tower. It has undergone many attacks such as that of the still celebrated one in 1592, with the Festa della Gatta.
