Like Rome, Istanbul and Lisbon, Cagliari is built on 7 hills and is the most important port of Sardinia, the beautiful Mediterranean island with a history more ancient than Rome. From the Bronze Age the Nuragic population entertained normal relations with the Mycenaeans and Phoenicians. Sardinia became a province of Rome and was embellished with theaters (still in use) and monuments. After the Aragonese occupation, Sardinia has retained a very strong bond with Barcelona and Catalonia and Catalan traces are found in the local language.
