The area around the river and the Amaseno valley has very ancient origins and is recounted in Virgil's Aeneid. However, the village of Amaseno is more recent and dates back to medieval times when populations sought refuge in the hills to escape the Barbarians. In 1125 it was sacked by the papal troops of Honorius II, and in the thirteenth century it became a fiefdom of Ceccano family that reinforced it. Then followed the Caetani family of Maenza and the Colonna, until the end of feudalism. Amaseno was located on the border between the Papal State and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and was therefore an ideal place for smugglers and bandits whose legends are still handed down.
