Located on the delta of the Po, the longest Italian River, Codigoro developed in the middle ages around the Benedictine Abbey of Pomposa. Originally built on an island, the Abbey is now on the Mainland as a result of various deviation works during the wars between Ferrara, Venice and the Papal States which repeatedly changed the course of the river.
1671 was the year in which the Abbey was abandoned and Codigoro began a new life as a commercial crossroads with a fair that still continues.
