Curiously Arcinazzo Romano was called Ponza until 1872 when King Vittorio Emanuele II decided to change its name to Ponza d’Arcinazzo and then in 1891 to Arcinazzo Romano. The village lies on an ancient villa of the emperor Trajan, a hunting lodge where the emperor enjoyed the beauties of the Affiliani mountains. All the Roman era archeological finds are kept in the Civic Museum. The most touristic part of the countryside are the 'Highlands of Arcinazzo', a wide flat area home to a major equestrian center and international sporting events.
